Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. When she was a infant, Ford struggled with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by the word association. Ford started acting in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she didn't fit in. Ford later applied for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however at the time, she had already made her debut on television in a 1991 episode of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her set in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
