Audra's versatility and breadth as an artist is second to none. Audra has received six Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and an Emmy Award. In 2015, she won record-breaking 6 Tony Awards as well as two Grammy Awards and Emmy Awards. The actress was also identified by Time magazine among the 100 most influential individuals and awarded with the National Medal of Arts - the highest honor given in America in recognition of artistic excellence - from President Barack Obama. With a stunning soprano, and an unrivalled talent for dramatic truth-telling her voice is at home on Broadway as well as on the stage as in her film and television roles. Apart from her theater work, she has an active career as a musician and recording artist. She is regularly performing in the best venues of the world. A musically inclined family, McDonald grew up living in Fresno California and received her singing training in the classical style at New York's Juilliard School. The year 1994 was the year after her Juilliard School, McDonald won the Tony Award for "Best Performance of a Leading Actress Musical" for Carousel. In the subsequent four years she won another two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. These were for her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's plays Master Class and Ragtime. The actress won the fourth Tony in 2004 starring with Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun as well as the following year in. In 2012, she took home five Tonys and her first award in the category of lead actress due to her performance on stage in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess as the title role. When she won the 6th Tony award in 2014, Billie Holiday's portrayal of the role Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill became the most prestigious Broadway performance. In 2017, she made the West End London West End debut, and was also nominated for the Olivier Award. As well as making history with the most performances that an actor has won in a competition she was also the first to win awards across all four categories. The credits for McDonald's theatre work comprise The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (99) Henry IV (2007) 110 in the Shade (2008) Twelfth (2009), which was the Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park premiere Shuffle Along or The Making of the Musical sensation in 1921 and All That Followed (2017) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2018) and Ohio State Murders 2023. McDonald made her television debut in the Peabody Award-winning CBS drama Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters's First Hundred Years. Her next role was that of a regular actor on NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit where she was a part of the cast with Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald was awarded her debut Emmy for her performance in her role in the HBO remake of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit written by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003 she was back on television but this time on Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., with Josh Brolin. The Bedford Diaries, a WB TV show, debuted in the year 2006. McDonald then appeared as the privilege of playing a regular role in NBC's Kidnapped in the year following. McDonald was awarded a fourth Emmy for her portrayal of Lady Day in Emerson's Bar and Grill on HBO in 2016. The Bite was a six episode drama about pandemics produced in collaboration with Spectrum Originals in collaboration with CBS Studios. McDonald appeared as U.S. prosecutor Liz Lawrence, a character she first appeared in the CBS drama The Good Wife legal drama in 2009. She reprised this role in the year 2018, playing Season regular Liz Reddick in Paramount+'s The Good Fight. In recognition of her performance, McDonald received three Critics Choice Award nominations. The actress is a featured appearance for the HBO series The Gilded Age by Julian Fellowes.
